Antelist has the theory that most Emotion and Thought can be summed through a binary form of analysis. A positive and negative, up and down, or however one wants to define it. The model used in Antelism is the Positive/Negative model of Binary Emotion. Emotions can have a Positive and Negative State. For example, the Emotion of Hunger, there is a Negative State of being hungry, and a Positive State of being Full. Do not confuse Positive/Negative with Pain and Pleasure, Positive and Negative are just telling you the one dimensional direction of a specific emotion and are just words to classify the direction.
The most well known Binary Emotion is the Pleasure/Pain binary. There is an emotion that dictates a state of being physical state of wellbeing, and the binary Positive/Negative of that Emotion are classified as Pleasure/Pain. Pain is something one doesn’t want, pleasure is someone one wants. Another Binary Emotion is that of Mental Feeling. The idea of “Mental Feeling” is like Pain and Pleasure but for the mental mind. This binary is Happiness/Sadness. Happy tells you that you are Positive about the state of something, and Sad tells you that you are Negative about the state of something.
However this is the example where the model starts to come apart. The Binary Emotion Model is not a perfect model, and Antelism actually believes in a multi-dimensional Emotion model but has not currently mapped out a comprehensive model. Therefore for education and understanding purposes the Binary Emotion Model is what is used since it helps people easily understand Emotion.
The reason this example breaks the model is because there are two Negative emotions regarding mental state of being. There is Sadness and there is Anger. So we have Happiness opposed to Sadness and Anger. So this becomes a complicated matter.
Antelism believes in the Theory of the Limitation of Language. That there states that language is a limiting factor towards true human expression of both Thought and Emotion. We can’t describe things perfectly with words, and despite how advanced a language becomes it will still have limitations.
Thus, describing emotions perfectly, and creating a perfect model of emotions through language alone, both are viewed as things not completely possible through language alone. And since we communicate through language there isn’t much more we can do other than say that we know something exists but can’t describe it perfectly. This is not uncommon in the world of Truth. Think of going to a park and seeing three trees in a specific location. You can say there are three trees there, but you can’t describe every square inch of the three trees with perfect accuracy with just words. This is the issue we run into with developing a model of Emotions. We know the Binary Model is generally correct just like how we know that there are three trees being in a location is generally correct, however we also know that the model is generally incomplete just like how the description of “three trees” is generally incomplete.
In Summary: The Binary model of Emotion, stating that Emotions have a Positive and Negative state, is a mostly accurate and useful model of human emotion. Because of its general accuracy it is a useful model for us to use for analysis and understanding f Human Nature. However, it is not the Pure Truth, but rather a high level of Limited Truth. And because this model works very well in prediction of human behavior we consider the Binary Model of Emotion to be Practical Truth.
